Kirk Franklin Will Be Honored with Black Music Icon Award at 2025 Recording Academy Event

Gospel music trailblazer Kirk Franklin will receive the prestigious Black Music Icon Award during the 2025 Recording Academy Honors Presented by the Black Music Collective. The event, a highlight of GRAMMY Week, will celebrate Franklin’s groundbreaking contributions to gospel music and his influence on global music culture.

The Recording Academy Honors will take place on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, just days before the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards on February 2. As part of GRAMMY Week, this event shines a spotlight on influential Black music creators who have shaped the music industry and inspired audiences worldwide.

Kirk Franklin, a 20-time GRAMMY winner, is celebrated for redefining gospel music by blending it with R&B and hip-hop, creating a transformative sound that resonates across generations. From his groundbreaking debut album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, to chart-topping hits like “Stomp,” “Revolution,” and “Brighter Day,” Franklin has continuously pushed the boundaries of gospel music.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. praised Franklin’s impact:

Franklin’s Contributions to Gospel and Beyond

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Kirk Franklin began his musical journey as a child prodigy, playing piano at age 4 and directing choirs by 11. Over his illustrious career, he has released 13 gold and platinum-certified albums and collaborated with artists like Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, and Chance the Rapper.

His innovative work with urban contemporary gospel choirs such as The Family, God’s Property, and One Nation Crew has consistently dominated the Billboard Gospel charts while crossing over into mainstream success.
